Why do imported songs sound different?

This piano roll uses 46 equal divisions of the octave (46 EDO), where each step is ~26.09 cents. The 12 standard notes are mapped to specific positions that create an interesting temperament with varied interval sizes.

The current mapping:

• C = 0, C# = 5, D = 8, D# = 13, E = 16, F = 19
• F# = 24, G = 27, G# = 32, A = 35, A# = 40, B = 43

What this temperament offers:

• Fifths vary: most are ~704 cents (slightly wider than pure), but A#-F is only ~652 cents (a wolf fifth)
• Major thirds alternate between ~417 cents (C-E, F-A, etc.) and ~365 cents (C#-F, D#-G, etc.)
• Minor thirds vary between ~287 cents (most) and ~339 cents (C-D#, F-G#, G-A#)
• Semitones vary dramatically: some are ~130 cents (C-C#), others only ~78 cents (E-F, B-C)
• This creates a unique harmonic character with its own consonances and dissonances

How to adapt imported music:

1. The mapping preserves the relative pitch relationships, but in a different temperament
2. Some intervals may sound more consonant, others more dissonant than expected
3. You can adjust individual notes up or down by 1-2 steps for different harmonic colors
4. Experiment with microtonality - try notes between the standard positions!
5. Embrace the unique character rather than trying to exactly match 12-EDO
